Bill Millin Memorial Fund
08/20/2010 – By now, you’ve heard of the recent passing
of Bill Millin, "Mad Piper" of WWII. At 21 he was a piper attached to the 1st
Special Service Brigade led by Simon Fraser, known by his clan
title, Lord Lovatt. Millin was the sole piper to brave mortar shells, raking machine guns and
sniper fire to play morale-pumping tunes for his fellow commandos on the
beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He was dressed in his father’s WWI kilt and
armed with only his sgian dubh.
The Mary Queen of Scots Brigade in France is erecting a memorial statue
of Millin near the Pegasus Bridge in Normandy and hope to have it complete
in time for the D-Day anniversary next year. The memorial is being funded
entirely through private donations. If you would like more information about
the project or how to donate, please visit their
Web site.
